Franco Uncini started his career as a professional motorcycle road racer with Laverda in the 750cc class. He then switched to Ducati and won several titles as an Italian champion.

In 1976, he joined Yamaha for his first year in the Grand Prix World Championship, competing in both the 250cc and 350cc classes.

In the following year, Uncini raced in both the 250cc and 350cc classes again. However, this time he joined the Harley-Davidson team.
